HELP-03 · How-to · 5 min
Key fob dead? Swap the battery in five minutes.
Which battery it takes, how to open it, and how to start the car even when the fob is dead.
Most fobs take a coin cell (often a CR2032). Pop the case open at the seam, match the + side, snap it shut. A dead fob can usually still start the car if you hold it against the start button.

Keep in mind
- Keep coin batteries away from kids and pets. They are dangerous if swallowed.
- Locked out with a dead fob? The metal key inside opens the driver’s door. Look for a small cap on the handle that hides the keyhole.
- Push-button start with a dead fob: most cars will still start if you hold the fob against the start button or put it in a marked spot in the console. Your manual will show where.
