The check engine light is the most misunderstood light on the dash. It can mean a loose gas cap or a misfire that's damaging your catalytic converter. Here's how to tell the difference, and what we actually do when you bring it in. (Different light? Tap it in our warning light decoder.)
Steady vs. flashing
- Steady light: the engine computer found a problem and stored a code. It's usually safe to drive for a short time, but book a scan soon. Ignoring it can turn a small fix into a big one.
- Flashing light: an active misfire. Unburned fuel is going into the exhaust and can overheat the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part. Slow down, avoid hard acceleration, and get it checked right away.
A code is a clue, not a diagnosis
Parts stores will read your code for free, and that's a fine first step. But a code tells you which system noticed a problem, not which part failed. A P0171 ("system too lean") can be caused by:
- A cracked vacuum hose or intake boot (cheap)
- A dirty mass airflow sensor (cheap)
- A weak fuel pump or clogged filter (not cheap)
- A leaking intake gasket (in between)
Replacing parts until the light goes off gets expensive fast. That's why we diagnose.
What a real diagnosis looks like
- Scan every module, not just the engine, and check for manufacturer service bulletins.
- Read live data: fuel trims, oxygen sensors, misfire counters, temperatures.
- Pinpoint test: smoke-test for vacuum leaks, check voltages, test the suspect component.
- Show you: a text with what we found, the photo, and a price. You decide.
Common codes we see in New Hampshire
- P0420 / P0430: catalytic converter efficiency. Sometimes the converter, often an O2 sensor or exhaust leak first.
- P0300–P0308: misfires. Plugs, coils, injectors or vacuum leaks.
- P0455 / P0456: EVAP leaks. Often the gas cap, sometimes a purge valve or a rusted line.
- P0128: coolant temperature below thermostat range. Common in cold weather when a thermostat sticks open. (Gauge going the other way? Read what to do when you overheat.)
